Root Canal Treatment
What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is a dental procedure used to save a tooth that is severely decayed, infected, or inflamed. Instead of removing the tooth, the infected tissue inside the tooth is cleaned and sealed, allowing the natural tooth to remain in place.
When is root canal treatment needed?
Root canal treatment is recommended when the nerve of the tooth becomes infected or irritated due to deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. Common symptoms may include persistent pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, swelling, or discomfort when biting, although in some cases there may be no obvious symptoms.
Diagnosis and planning
The tooth is carefully examined, and X-rays are taken to determine the extent of the infection. Based on the diagnosis, the procedure is explained in detail so you understand the treatment, the expected outcome, and any alternative options.
How the procedure works
The treatment is performed under local anesthesia, making it comfortable and pain-free. The infected tissue inside the tooth is removed, and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. The tooth is then sealed to prevent further infection. In many cases, a dental crown is recommended afterward to protect and strengthen the tooth.
After the treatment – what to expect
Mild tenderness or sensitivity is normal for a short time after treatment and usually improves within a few days. Any discomfort can typically be managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Normal chewing can usually be resumed gradually, following your dentist’s advice.
