Surgical Extractions
What are surgical extractions?
Surgical extractions are dental procedures used to remove teeth that cannot be easily removed with a regular extraction. This may be due to the tooth being broken, impacted, or positioned unusually. The goal is to remove the tooth safely while minimizing discomfort and protecting the surrounding teeth and gums. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, making it comfortable and pain-free.
Wisdom teeth extractions
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge, usually during the late teens or early twenties. They often do not have enough space to erupt properly, which can lead to pain, swelling, infection, or damage to neighboring teeth.
Some wisdom teeth can be removed with a simple extraction if the tooth has fully erupted and can be easily removed. Others require a surgical extraction, particularly when the tooth is impacted or partially covered by gum or bone. In these cases, a small incision may be made in the gum, and the tooth may be divided into sections to facilitate removal. The area is then cleaned and sutured if necessary to support proper healing.
After the procedure – what to do
Rest and allow your body time to heal. Mild swelling and discomfort are normal and can be managed with cold compresses and prescribed or over-the-counter medication. Eat soft foods for a few days and maintain gentle oral hygiene around the extraction site. Follow-up visits help ensure proper healing and allow for suture removal if needed
